Simply put, diabetes is a disorder in which a person has high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Diabetes is due to either the pancreas not producing enough insulin, or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin produced. Untreated, diabetes can cause many complications, some very serious. Globally, as of 2013, an estimated 382 million people (8.2%) have diabetes worldwide. In 2012 and 2013 diabetes resulted in 1.5 to 5.1 million deaths per year, making it the 8th leading cause of death.
We are a group of people who are dedicated to helping diabetics, pre-diabetics, and their family members. Our focus is two-fold:
- Raise the money necessary to continue funding promising research into diabetes – not only for treatment, we want a CURE!
- Raise awareness about this dreaded disease and provide educational resources to help prevent, treat and eventually CURE diabetes!
